PS3 HD to Ship with Linux?
Hot on the heels of this week’s earlier news that the PS3 won’t ship with a hard drive, Ken “Xbox 1.5″ Kutaragi has mentioned off-hand that he would like to see Linux installed on the optional drive.
This time, we’re positioning the PS3 as a “supercomputer.” But people won’t recognize it as a computer unless we call it a computer, so we’re going to run an OS on it. In fact, the Cell can run multiple OSes. In order to run the OSes, we need an HDD. So in order to declare that the PS3 is a computer, I think we’ll have [the PS3's HDD] preinstalled with Linux as a bonus.
We think this is more of an attempt to fling more crap Microsoft’s way than actual intent to ship Linux, but who knows. Sony is certainly making it clear that they don’t want the PS3 referred to as a “game machine” under any circumstances.

apparently ibm has a guy working on the port of linux to the cell processor, he’s on the guest list for linuxtag 2005. now that apple has made the switch away from powerpc, it looks like the bulk of linux/ppc development may end up being for the ps3.
regardless, i will be intrigued if the ps3 is actually useful as a pc; particularly because it could drive the uptake of linux. i really don’t expect there to be a winppc port anytime soon. the ps3 seems to be positioned to the cheap, stable, fast, networked computer with accellerated graphics. as for monkey’s very good anti-linux point - total lack of game support - who cares about pc games when you have the playstation catalog to work with?
meanwhile microsoft has spent a fair amount of time and money making sure that folks don’t confuse the xbox / xbox360 with a pc- they want it to be seen as a pure games console like the current generation. is this what kutarugi means when he says they are competing with the ps2 rather than the ps3?
