Mark Rein Talks Next-Gen Engines, PC Games

Mr Mark Rein AKA “Father Unreal” has quite an interesting perspective from that impressive tower he’s built. See, Rein has managed to get his Unreal Engine to be the de facto standard middleware engine on both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, essentially ensuring that he’ll get a piece of the pie for most next-gen games sold. Rein has been aboard the 360 train since GDC and the Sony express since just before E3.

I’m kinda of the fence on this one, since anything that makes developer’s lives easier I’m generally for. However, I also think that the universality of the engine will make two platforms that will probably look pretty similar graphics-quality-wise look even more similar in the long run.

One thing is for sure: multi-plat releases are here to stay. Hopefully new multi-plat tools will make the games better overall.
